Happy New Year!
CSDS
wishes everyone a Happy New Year!! We hope 2012 is even better than
last year and full of good health and prosperity along with more dancing
:-)
For
2012, we have planned another year of great dance opportunities in the
form of monthly dances, free weekly dance practices and special workshop
weekends. You don't have to be a member of CSDS to attend any of
our functions BUT members pay reduced admission, so think about joining CSDS today and
supporting the only volunteer run not-for-profit local dance club that we
know of.
And,
along those lines, Board of Directors elections are not too far off at
our March dance! If you'd like to make a difference and give back
to the dance community, please consider joining the CSDS Board of
Directors. Each spring, 5-7 people are elected as Directors and
these people, along with a handful of "Helpers", keep CSDS
going in organizing all of our events. It's not a lot of work and more
hands makes less work for each person! We meet one evening a
month, a fun potluck dinner meeting. Feel free to talk to any
of our current Board members/helpers (listed at left) for a
first-hand account of what it's like to serve as a Board of Director, or
better yet, nominate someone (even yourself) by letting Lisa Morales or John Robertson know.

You
spoke and we listened!! In January, one of our two pre-dance
lessons, included in your admission, is just for the ladies!
DJ/Lesson Instructor Alyssa Lundgren (above, left) will
teach her favorite, LADIES
STYLING from 6:30-7:15 pm and beginner/intermediate West
Coast Swing from 7:15-8 pm. Our dance is 8-11 pm. It's
also HOT
CHOCOLATE NIGHT!! CSDS will have hot chocolate
(marshmellows too!) on hand, while supplies last, FREE!
Coming
in February, back by popular demand, Raleigh Pro Robin Smith (above,
right) returns February 17th-19th for another Workshop Weekend.
We'll have Saturday afternoon workshops followed by a catered dinner and
our annual Illumination
Dance, deejayed by Robin, that evening.
Robin will be available for private lessons Friday, Saturday and
Sunday. Workshop flyer and registration form are available here .
Are
you interested in taking (more) classes? Have any friends
who'd like to learn to dance? Then consider group classes
through our partner, the County of Albemarle Parks & Recreation
department. Longtime instructor Kristin Wenger will be teaching two
West Coast Swing classes starting Tuesday, January 10th, Level 1 and
Advanced (New Moves). You can get more information here. Classes
are held at the Murray High School gym which is where Swing Swap, our free
weekly dance practice is held!
Are
you interested in attending a dance event? We are fortunate to live
close to the DC area where there are at least three major weekend dance
events each year: Dave Moldover's MADjam in early March,
Swing Fling in
early August and DC Swing eXperience
in early November. Anywhere from 20-40 dancers from the
Charlottesville area regularly attend these events, enjoying
workshops taught by national pros, competitions for everyone from
Newcomer on up (if that's your thing), performances and of
course, social dancing all night long! Going to a weekend event is
a great way to improve your social dancing and meet dancers from other
parts of the country. Just ask anyone who has ever gone to
one!
See
you on the dance floor ...

Highlights from
the Holiday Dance
2011 Came
to a close with what seemed like record attendance at our Holiday
Dance with DJ/Lesson Instructor Kristin Wenger, who, along with her
partner and special guest, Mike Glasgow, performed their 3rd Place US
Open Sophisticated Swing routine! Our dancers also enjoyed seeing
two up-and-coming youth dancers ~ Ava (Eddie's daughter) and Alex (Al's
son) ~ having fun dancing with all of us grownups!! We predict
they'll be West Coast Swing stars in the future! If only we all
could have started dancing that young :-)
