Come to the Holiday Dance!
|
|
|
|
Congratulations, Kristin!
Most of you know the lovely Kristin Wenger, the local
dance instructor who teaches group classes through the County of
Albemarle Parks & Rec Dept. Well, now you know a US Open Swing Dance
Championship winner!! Kristin and her routine partner,
Mike Glasgow, have been traveling the event circuit this past year,
competing in the Sophisticated Swing and Rising Star divisions at dance
events all over the country. They just returned from spending
Thanksgiving weekend in California where they competed in the Olympics of
swing dancing, the US Open, and they placed THIRD in
the Sophisticated Swing division! Most of us can
only dream about doing something like this but Kristin made it happen
with an incredible amount of dedication, hard work and talent, not
to mention hours of practicing, traveling to national events and the
expense of doing all that. Congratulations to both of them for this
noteworthy accomplishment and a big thank you to Kristin for her many
years of providing quality instruction to the Charlottesville dance
community, helping us all be better dancers, and for being such a great
inspiration to us all.
And,
speaking of which, you'll get to see Kristin and Mike perform their
routine at the December dance on the 17th. Kristin returns to be our DJ
and lesson instructor for the evening and after the break, she and Mike,
our special guest, will give us a special performance.
We
hope you can make it to our annual Holiday Dance (dressy attire
encouraged) on Saturday December 17th at Unity Church. How about
bringing a friend or two? First-timers pay half price admission!
In keeping with tradition, our holiday dance is an optional POTLUCK ~ if
you are so inclined, bring a dish to share. Rumor has it that Swing
Swap DJ Lisa Morales will bring her famous hot crab dip again (hint,
hint!)!!

Special
"Thank You" to Some Special People ...
by Adela Su,
Newsletter Editor
As
we enter into the final month of 2011, I would like to personally
take this opportunity to give special thanks to a few individuals who
have been helping to cultivate the dance community for many years.
They often fly under the radar yet are so generous and welcoming to
everyone in organizing non-CSDS functions where all are welcome:
John
Robertson
-
Each summer, John organizes several tubing trips on the James
River. If you've never been tubing, this is great fun! What better
way to spend a hot summer day, lazily floating on the river? All ages are
welcome so it's a great outing kids can enjoy.
-
Each New Year's Eve, John hosts a party at his house. It starts at 8 pm, come
by for all or part of the evening if you have other plans too, kids
welcome. There's great food, socializing and of course, dancing in your
socks. Sometimes we are having so much fun, we miss the stroke of
midnight!!
Bonnie
Strickler
-
Each summer, Bonnie hosts 3 pool parties (Memorial Day weekend, July 4th,
Labor Day weekend) at her lovely Sugar Hollow property in western
Albemarle County. They start at 1 pm and go to the late evening
hours. Activities include hanging out by the pool, playing pool
volleyball, eating, socializing, wandering around the property (where you
can see hummingbirds, frogs, fish and other critters), a fabulous
cookout, a walk to the reservoir after dinner, and dancing
afterwards. Do as much or as little as you like!! It's very
casual, all are invited, and it's super kid-friendly.
To
view some pictures of all of this fun, click here!
John
and Bonnie have been doing this for YEARS, as long as I can
remember. Please join me in expressing my gratitude for their warm
spirit and generosity, thank you!

To get on the list to receive notifications of these events, which are
also announced at Swing Swap, please send your name/email address to us!
