Yup, that's right! Two summers ago, Eddie took
Adela home to Norway to visit his family and thanks to Facebook,
they met some WCS dancers in Oslo. This month, Eddie
& Adela return, taking Eddie's daughter, Ava, for her first
visit. Plans are to meet up with the Norwegian WCS dancers again

Listen To The Music
by
Diane McDougall
If you've been part of CSDS for the last year, you couldn't
have missed the Keith-Hynes family of dancers: Patrick, Meghan,
Aidan and Bronwyn. They've taken lessons at almost every dance
studio in Charlottesville - most recently The Dance Oasis.
Diane McDougall talked with Patrick about this family hobby
and specifically how he searches out new dancing music.
When did you start getting into West
Coast Swing as a dance style?
At Terry Dean's, we had started with ballroom and a little
bit of swing. I got to the point I could do the basics in
everything but that was about it. Then I noticed people doing West
Coast Swing.
We found CSDS about a year and a half ago, and I
thought I'd pick one dance to get a little better at. With
West Coast, I can dance to the music I like: pop, hip-hop, stuff
that's a little more current.
The other thing I really like about West Coast is how much
room there is for improvisation. It feels like the dance
version of jazz.
You and Aidan are always looking for new music - tell us
more about that.
Everyone's probably familiar with Pandora on their computer,
which lets you find music in a particular style. And it'll
play a mix for you. Bronwyn likes grooveshark.com even
better. Both of these sites are legit - there are lots of sites
where you can steal music, but I'm not interested in them. I'm
obviously extra sensitive to the issue because I write software for a
living and have kids who are musicians.
If you're out at a dance event and they're playing a song
you like and want to identify, there are two tools I know of that you can
use with an iPhone or iPod Touch. One is an app called
Shazam. Just press a button and hold up your iPhone, and Shazam
will do a pretty good job of identifying it.
There's an even better one called SoundHound that Aidan
showed me. Just this morning I couldn't remember the name of a song
or the exact lyrics, so I tried humming it into my iPhone. I'm not
a great singer, and I was just trying to get the tone and the beat
right. And SoundHound identified it: Madonna's
"Secret."
Of course, if you just get a fragment of a lyric and write
it down, you can Google it and sometimes that works too.
And if you have a song favorite you
want to recommend, click the "Send a Song" link on the CSDS website!

Next Area Dance Event ~ Swing Fling
The next area weekend dance event is Swing Fling, from
August 5th-8th, at the Hilton Washington
Dulles. As usual, a large Charlottesville- Central
Virginia area contingent is going to partake in this weekend of
competitions, performances, workshops galore and of course, social
dancing until the wee hours of the morning. If you're
even considering going, go ahead and book a hotel room (you
can always cancel it later) to get the group rate (and sometimes
using your Triple A discount is cheaper) as the hotel usually sells
out.
Event promoter
Barry Durand has a few special deals this year:
1) Buy
a VIP Pass to Swing Fling and get a FREE Weekend Pass to Virginia State Open,
November 19th-21st, 2010.
2) Reserved
Tables: there will only be ten (10) reserved tables (each seats 10
people) in the ballroom, sold in advance to those who purchase
VIP Passes. If you'd like a guaranteed seat at one of the Charlottesville
tables, here's what you need to do:
B. By July 25th, purchase your
VIP Pass. If you buy your pass by
July 7th, the price is $140; after, it's $170. The VIP Pass
includes everything. On July 26th, Adela will send Barry the
list of names for our tables.
Any questions,
please ask Adela!
