Meet ..... CSDS Member, Kimberlee
Morton!
by Diane McDougall, Newsletter Contributor
Charlottesville's swing-dance community is eclectic, if
nothing else. On any given night of Swing Swap, you might
partner up with an attorney, real-estate agent or home builder, with a
Spanish teacher, artist or massage therapist.
Or the manager of a horse farm.
Meet Kim Morton, who manages a small, private horse
farm for a retired couple in Free Union, where she also cares for her own
thoroughbred Connemara (Rosie) and her three border collies (Atom, Wink
and Sham).
Kim's journey to Free Union started outside Montreal, where
she grew up. Over the years since, she has lived in Kobe, Japan, as
well as Massachusetts, Kentucky, New York and Florida. She's been
riding horses since she was 5 and dancing since March 2009.
Dancing started with a simple invitation from a friend,
Faith O'Toole, whom she knew from fox hunting together. Someone had asked
Faith to attend a waltz and then invited her to Swing Swap. Faith
had a blast and soon after said to Kim, "You've got to come."
"I probably wouldn't have ventured out on my own,"
Kim admits, "but Faith persuaded me and I had fun. People were
very friendly and open to the fact that I didn't know anything.
They asked me to dance and helped me learn some basic steps. It was
very welcoming.
"I picked up on East Coast, and that made me want to
keep coming back and trying. Eventually, because I wasn't doing
West Coast very well, I said to myself, Enough, already! Go take
lessons so you're not at the same point you were five months ago. I
took Kristin Wenger's class, and she makes it so easy to learn.
"Now I can watch people and count what they're
doing. The fancier steps are mind-boggling, but at least I've got
more of an idea, and I just have to keep practicing."
Kim is now in level two of Kristin's West Coast Swing
classes through the Albemarle County Park and Rec and she'll say to
anyone else who is new: "Take lessons sooner than I did, so you
progress and don't get stuck. Keep trying. Give yourself a
set amount of time to try, and don't give up.
"Just know that everybody was once in the same boat -
everybody. And they haven't forgotten that."
