Over the August 7-9 weekend, CSDS
dancer Cindy Rogers (and about 1,000 of her closest friends - remember,
she's a people-person) attended a large dance event in D.C. called Swing Fling. Although
Cindy started with country and western dancing 18 years ago and has been
dancing West Coast Swing for almost six years, this was the first time
she had ever competed. And she advanced to the Jack & Jill*
Newcomer finals in both Hustle and West Coast Swing - placing fourth
in Hustle and fifth in WCS!
Cindy had been to Swing Fling once before, about five years
earlier. But competition was a new idea. "Some people
might feel they have to be at a certain level before they go to something
like Swing Fling," she says. "But I don't think that's
true, because of the variety of ways you can participate: attending workshops,
sitting at the Charlottesville table and observing the dancers during
competition, competing yourself, taking private lessons with the pros,
meeting new people, and just dancing. "At events like
this, there are more dancers at an intermediate or advanced level, so
it's an opportunity to "dance up."
In the end, Swing Fling was everything Cindy expected. And the
competitions were a highlight - both watching and participating.
"I could see people who were at the same level I am but who were doing
different things," she says. "I thought, Oh, I can do
that. So that took some of the mystery away."
"In the competitions, I was fortunate enough to have really good
partners. Another highlight while in the competition was hearing
the support of the Charlottesville group. And my roomies were
great!"
Twenty-six people attended Swing Fling from the Charlottesville dance
community, and most people tried to dance with as many different people
as possible. Approaching strangers to ask for a dance might seem
overwhelming at first, but it becomes easier as the weekend progresses.
After being in workshops all Saturday morning,
Cindy pointed out, you recognize people from those workshops and can ask
if they want to practice what you both learned. "They're a
familiar face," Cindy says, "and it helps cement the
move. "It was nice that in several of the workshops I
attended, there were numerous Charlottesville leaders, so they can lead
the moves [when we return]. Still, I concentrated on learning
technique or styling moves that I can use independent of having a partner
learn the same thing.
"There's something for everybody at these
dance events, whether you compete or not. Try it - you might really
enjoy it!"
*"Jack & Jill" competitions
refer to when men and women know which style of music they'll be dancing
to but are randomly paired with a partner.
Curious about dance events now? Mark November 19-22 on your
calendar for the next big swing-dance event in DC, the Virginia State Open, and
stay turned for more information in upcoming CSDS newsletters!
Tips for
first-time dance-event attendees:
 Be well-rested before you go.
Wear good dance shoes (or buy them
there!).
Limit the number of workshops you
attend, so you
Ask others to dance, and look for people who are
better than you and seem to be enjoying the people
Bring a notepad and pen to the workshops and write
down what you learn; then, practice during open
Drive up with other Charlottesville dancers, stay at
