Light On My Feet
I never took dancing lessons as a
child. Yet, over the years, I dipped my toe in a few times. In my 20s, I
took ballroom lessons with a few friends and then simply stopped when our
lessons stopped (partner gone, Diane stops). Twice in my 30s - after
swing-dancing lessons with a girlfriend, and then after more lessons with
a half-hearted boyfriend - I gave up my dancing heart because, again, I
didn't have a permanent partner.
But then in my 40s, my friend Adela
talked me into more swing-dance lessons and into dances, and I found that
lots of others were dancing without a regular partner. And I loved it.
During Saturday-night dances, I'd spend two, three hours dancing -
grinning the entire time, mistakes and all, just because I was out there
moving my body and responding to the music and feeling pretty and
feminine.
It was as if my lessons had watered
something that sprouted inside me.
Several months after starting West
Coast Swing lessons, I found myself in the dim light of a balmy August
evening in Abingdon, Va., where a friend and I were spending a few days
on vacation. That evening, hundreds of townspeople and tourists had
pulled up lawn chairs or were dancing in front of a stage where aging
Baby Boomers played beach music and rock-n-roll.
For a few minutes I stood alone, my
body swaying, held back by years of inhibition: Would I just make a fool of
myself? But my new love affair with dancing won out, and I found myself
weaving through the crowd of strangers to the grassy dance floor.
I don't know how long I danced -
alone, yes, but it didn't matter. I was smiling the entire time. After
awhile, one couple off to the side caught my attention, and I realized
they were doing East Coast Swing, then some West Coast. My heart jumped,
and I sidled over to introduce myself. Before I knew it, they had
welcomed me into their joy of dancing.
The rest of the evening, I
practically floated. I couldn't have told these no-longer-strangers how
much it meant to me. I couldn't have described to them how the dancing
alone filled something inside me, and how their open invitation - to
someone so inexperienced - made everything glow.
That evening made it clear: I've
found my dancing heart again. And I'm hooked.
Thank you, Urbie and Marilyn Nash, for a few moments of ECS
and WCS that night. What a joy to see you in Night Club 2 lessons in February
and then at Bonnie's Memorial Day party. It's a small, small (dancing)
world. . . .
