| Tip Of The
Month |
| Learn Body Leads!
A man's (or woman's!) lead should
originate with his body, not his hands/arms. Leading
with the arms results in bad body lines and is uncomfortable
to the follower. The hands and arms only provide the
connection to the body. Lead cues come from the
man's body position and the direction of his movement, and in
some patterns, from his frame including the arms. The
leader moves his center of gravity and the follower will
follow providing there is good frame. This means
the leader must move his feet; he cannot stand in one place
and lead the follower through
patterns. |

Congratulations to Cindy Rogers on the new addition to
her family! Cindy's daughter Danielle gave birth to
Monica Kaye Lawhorne on Thursday, September 18. Monica
weighed in at 7 lbs. 2 oz. and measured 20.75
inches. |
| A Note of
Thanks |
| Our dear friend, Jay Hearns, whose father
passed away last month, asked Cindy Rogers to share this with
us:
Dear Cindy,
Please pass along my deepest of thanks to Lisa, Kevin,
Don and Christy for coming out to the funeral and also to all
of those who have sent me their deepest regrets. I want
to let everybody know that it really meant a lot to me
and it will be something I will never forget.

Annual Halloween Dance This
Month!
Come on out and strut your stuff in the
Costume Contest at this
month's Halloween Dance on
October 18th at the
GOC! Ken Roesel returns to DJ this
favorite annual event. Need a costume? Try
places like Party Starts Here (Seminole Square,
Pantops), K-Mart, Target, eBay, search online, try thrift
shops and secondhand stores, make your own costume!
Costumes are not required but are
encouraged. Prizes will be given for the best
costumes! To get an idea of what people wear, check out
last year's Halloween Dance!
Can you lend a hand? We need HELP to decorate the dance
hall starting at 2 pm. It's fun, it's exciting, free
snacks! Contact Ginny or Adela if you can volunteer some of your
time. |
Highlights from
the September Dance
Once again we packed 'em in at the MAC for

Do you know these
dancers?!

Larry Saunders - Also
known as "Star Man"! Prior to moving to
Charlottesville in 1994, Larry lived within a few miles of his
birthplace in the Maryland suburbs of Washington DC. He
went all the way over to the next county to go to college at
the University of Maryland. While taking
disco dance/Hustle lessons (it was the 70's after all!),
he met his wife, Terri, at a dance on the summer solstice
and they were married 5 months later. Life took over
with raising their daughter, Julie, and with his career as a
real estate agent, so they took a break from dancing for the
next 25 years. During the day, Larry leads an
exciting life as a mortgage loan officer with Mahone Mortgage where he
arranges the necessary financing for people to purchaser
or refinance their homes. A few years ago, Larry
and Terri started taking dance instruction again. West
Coast Swing is their favorite although Larry is getting back
into learning Hustle again. Running is also another
passion of Larry's and you can catch sight of him out on
the streets of Charlottesville at 5:30 am at least 3 mornings
a week. He has participated in a few marathons and
triathlons in the last few years. Right now he is
training to make a Century (100 mile) bicycle ride in
October. Larry must not need much sleep because he is
also an avid amateur astronomer. He regularly gives
astronomical presentations at UVa's McCormick Observatory for school
groups and scouts and then shows them around the night sky
with the big telescope there. He is also an active
member of the Charlottesville Astronomical Society where he
has been the Treasurer for the past 4 years. Larry is
the current Vice President of CSDS and is also the Webmaster
for the club's website. By the way, check out the
updated website with
brighter colors, easier navigation and updated photos!

Jeanne Stanborough was born
in Waterbury, CT and now lives in
Charlottesville. She started dancing about 3
years ago and her favorite dance is West Coast
Swing. By day she is a Financial Advisor with
Wachovia Securities. One can often catch her power
walking the Mall during lunch hour! Jeanne is very
active in her church, First United Methodist Church. She
is Chair of Outreach and oversees 22 ministries which support
the less fortunate in our community, Appalachia, Belize and
Lithuania. They do a weekly soup kitchen, coordinate 2
food pantries, shelter and feed the homeless for 3 weeks, just
to name a few. To raise funds, Jeanne came up with a
Chocolate Festival! The second annual is October 18th at
Lee Park, Downtown. There is also a Chocolate Chase, a 5K walk/run, at 8
am that morning. She says "you could really be
guilt-free if you participated and then enjoy the Chocolate
Festival!" Jeanne is a yuppie-looking tree hugger, an
avid recycler and hiker and someone who just loves the great
outdoors. Jeanne's daughter, son-in-law and
granddaughter live in New Orleans and she hopes they will move
here in 3
years! |
