Of The Month |
| Direction On The Dance
Floor
Which Way Do I Go?:
Learning the direction of movement on a dance floor is
crucial! Otherwise, you might end up bumping into other
dancers on the floor. Dancing in a crowd should always
move counterclockwise around the floor following an imaginary
line of dance for dances like Country 2-Step and Waltz.
These dances are known as progressive dances because they
move, travel around the dance floor. West Coast Swing,
on the other hand, is a non-progressive dance and more of a
confined dance typically done in a slot and is great for
dancing on crowded dance floors. The line of dance (LOD)
follows the same principles as a skating rink: the people who
are moving fast are on the outside ring of the floor while
those who are moving slower or in confined areas are on inside
ring and/or in the dead space in the middle. In
other words, progressive dances like Country 2-Step and Waltz
are done on the outside of the dance floor while the
non-progressive dances like swing and line dances are done in
the center. |

Highlights from the
August Dance
DJ Kristin Wenger Packs 'Em In @ the MAC
Wow, did we have fun or what? Our
August dance was packed to the gills at the MAC! Even
with the downstairs West Coast Swing Lounge, upstairs
it was "standing room only." In addition to our
regular attendees, we were happy to see lots of new
faces, some of our "old timers" who don't come that
often, and special guest Patti (Ennis) Jobst from
California! Patti, a Charlottesville native and two
time US Open Swing Dance Champion, is responsible for bringing
West Coast Swing to Charlottesville. She
was thrilled to see WCS being danced so much and
remembers when she worked so hard to introduce WCS to us at a
time when East Coast Swing was so popular. Patti will be
back in Charlottesville in early/mid-October and will be
available to give Private Lessons - contact Patti if you are
interested in scheduling a private.

dance photos!
